What Your Face Shape Has to Do With Your Style…
Written by Administrator

Have you ever seen a great celebrity hairstyle that you want to make your own?

You get the cut, but for some reason, it does not seem to have the same effect as it did on the red carpet celebrity you saw sporting it first. One of the reasons could be that the specific cut does not work with your face shape. Having the wrong cut for your face shape, can make your leap to the latest trend you feeling flat.

When choosing your new style there are several very important factors you should consider before requesting our stylist don you with a new coif.

  • What shape is your face?
  • Have you ever seen a great celebrity hairstyle that you want to make your own? You get the cut, but for What type of hair do you have? Straight/Wavy/Curly/Kinky, Fine/Medium/Thick Etc…
  • Volume?

We will focus on face shape, because it is often the most difficult to determine for yourself what face shape you have. Your Van Michael Salon service provider can assist you with this process in our in-depth portfolio consultation. But in the meantime let’s get as close to discovering what your true face shape is as we can.

You can easily do this by pulling your hair back and tracing the outline of your face on a mirror with lipstick, a non-permanent marker, a bar of soap etc., anything that will define the outline of your face. Seeing an outline on the mirror will allow you to be more objective about the shape of your face than just staring at yourself. (do not get us wrong, vanity has its place, just not right now.)

Below are several different face shapes, and hopefully you will find the one that most closely resembles yours.

Oval

Oval - Length of face is noticeably longer than the width.

Even proportions make oval faces the most versatile and need not rely on a hairstyle to define it. An oval face shape is well balanced, and will look best with styles that keep hair off the face, allowing the perfect features of your face shape to be visible.

If you happen to have a longer oval face we suggest bangs to visually shorten the distance from the forehead to the chin.

Avoid heavy bangs or too forward directed styles. Wearing your hair in the face will cause you to lose those perfect oval features behind your locks and may appear to add weight to your face.

Parts- Most parts will work. Sharp center part for a chic look or you can break up a long oval face by parting your hair to the side.

Celebrities who share this face shape include Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Jada Pinkett Smith, Heidi Klum Eva Mendez Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, Mariah Carey, Kate Bosworth Cindy Crawford, Julia Roberts Elle MacPherson, Tyra Banks.

rectangular

Rectangular or oblong Face is same width at brow, cheeks and jaw is narrow in proportion to length.
The goal for a great hairstyle with this appearance is to visually shorten the face and to widen the cheekbone area for more balance. Soft, wispy bangs will appear to shorten the length of the face as do mid length cuts with fullness on the side . Layers will help to add softness to the straight lines of your face and create more balance.

Avoid Long straight hair and height on top as both will lengthen the appearance of your face (think mask), as well as hair pulled straight back.

Celebrities who share this face shape- Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashlee Simpson, Giselle Bundchen, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gabrielle Reece.

Round- Cheekbones are wider than brow bone and jaw line. Outline is curves in a circular shape. Full cheeks can conceal even the best bone structure, causing a round face to lack definition. Your best styles will be cuts that appear to elongate the face. This can be remedied by creating height at the crown.

Styles with face framing layers can slim a full face and create the illusion of cheekbones making your face appear longer and narrower.

A slightly off center part will compensate for the roundness, but a centered part can draw the eye of an admirer up giving your face the appearance of a longer shape.

Avoid: Very short styles or a center part because it will only emphasize the fullness of the face. A rounded haircut ending at the chin will add weight to your face. In other words avoid a Victoria Beckham cut for you.

Celebrities who share this face shape- Fergie, Oprah Winfrey, Cameron Diaz, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci.

Square- Brow bone, cheekbone, and jaw line are approximately the same width. Length of face is short in proportion to width.

If you have a square shaped face, you’ll want to play down your strong, angular jaw by softening the edges of your face. Texture, in the form of curls or choppy ends, do this brilliantly. You can also get away with short, spiky cuts and long, sleek styles with layers that start at the jaw line and continue downward.

Any choice of length will work as long as you have short pieces to frame the face. If your hair is naturally curly, play up your waves to their maximum. Most important ti remember when styling is you are trying to achieve some roundness to the shape of your hair and height in the crown to pull away from the hard lines pf a square faced shape.

Avoid: One-length bobs (especially chin-length) and blunt-cut bangs. These will make your face look even more square.

Celebrities who share this face shape- Salma Hayek,Sandra Bullock, Demi Moore, Isabella Rosellini Angelina Jolie, and Rosario Dawson.

Heart- Forehead and cheekbones are wider than jaw line creating a prominent v-shaped chin.

A pointy chin tends to be the focal point of your face. Objective is to balance the lower potion of the face with a broader forehead by drawing attention to your eyes and cheekbones with sideswept bangs, brow length fringe, and hair that falls at or below your jaw line.

A chin or shoulder length style that’s angled form the jaw down to fill in where the chin is narrowest.

If you have a dramatic heart shape face, you have great cheekbones to emphasize. You want to avoid any style that makes you appear to top heavy.

Avoid: Short, blunt-cut bangs and harsh, choppy layers, and height at the crown, as it draws attention and will create an imbalance.

Celebrities who share this face shape- Katie Holmes, Jennifer Lopez, Rachel Bilson, Reese Witherspoon, Ziyi Zhang, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ashley Judd, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kate Hudson.

Triangular- Jaw line significantly wider than the brow bone and cheekbone. Minimize jaw line and add width to brow and cheek area. Keep length above or below- but not at- jaw line. Fullness is flattering. You may want to try shorter hair that balances the prominent jaw line. Lots of layers will help to achieve the fullness at the upper part of your face. Drawing attention to your eyes will add width to the appearance of your face.

Avoid Any cut that leaves your hair even with your jaw line, as it will give the appearance of added weight to the face.
