I asked Jeffrey Goldenstein, the Creative Director for our Sandy Springs location his thoughts about curly hair and its reemergence on the runways this past fall. I also asked why curly hair is such a challenge for some people and below is what he shared with me.
I'm glad to see curly hair making a come back, and I know for some (much to your pleasure) it never went away. This past week I cut my wife's shoulder length flat-ironed straight hair into a shorter curly/wavy textured wash and wear style, which caused me to break down my thoughts about curly hair.
Who is the best stylist with curly hair? I am not sure if I know the exact answer to that question, but what I do know is the best stylist for curly hair is someone who puts a tremendous amount of thought to how the hair will act and react to removing weight.
All curly hair is different and what works for one might not work on another. Cutting curly hair is an art. I find tight curls should not ever be over layered because if you do, the style can become REALLY big. Wavy (not curly, but wavy) hair allows for more options for layers, however if it is truly curly hair you are working with, this is not an option.
As with any hair type one must consider face shape and the texture (fine/coarse) of the hair before the shears are even unsheathed. This is ideally done during the consultation using a portfolio and is imperative that the stylist sees the hair when it is dry.
One should never use texturizing scissors or a razor on curly hair as this can very easily make the hair frizzy and slightly unmanageable for anyone other than a professional to style.
Styling products are just as important as the cut. Be-Curly shampoo and conditioner from Aveda is a must. It gently cleans and conditions curly hair, which is a great start to reducing frizz. Follow up with a styling product of your choice as this all depends on your type of curl and desired effect. The nice thing is Aveda has a lot to choose from, but remember no matter what if you have curly hair, styling products are a must.
When styling curly hair it should be evenly wet during the product application process.
Air dry or diffuse?
It all depends on the desired effect. A diffuser can make the curls tighter and the style fuller. (Diffuser should be set on high heat and low air and lean your hair into the diffuser). Be careful not to over dry the hair.
Air drying will generally give you a softer less full look. (When hair dries naturally loosen up with fingers and give a light shake). Remember, the more you touch curly hair through the day the more likely it is to become frizzy.
The proper cut mixed with the proper styling products and application of those products will make the curly hair experience more enjoyable.
