Here Comes the Sun...

Its that time again, summer is here and that means more time out in the sun. So, What are you going to do to protect your skin and hair color from the harmful effects of the sun and chlorine? Here are a few tips to help you through all those fun outings.

Sun Screen, Sun Screen, Sun Screen. Everyone has been taught to put on that sun screen when out at the beach, pool, hiking, biking or any lengthy period outside, but so many of us forget to put sun screen on the face or don’t for fear of the horrible breakout. Well then why not try a moisturizer with an SPF. Aveda has a wonderful moisturizer with an SPF of 15. The “Tourmaline Charged Protecting Lotion” not only has SPF 15, but is oil-free. This moisturizer will hydrate the skin and help protect from the harmful effects of the sun, such as sun spots, wrinkles and skin cancers. So don’t forget your face, sun or no sun put that moisturizer/sun screen on.

What about your hair? Yes the hair needs sun screen too. Especially those of us who have hair color. The sun is the biggest enemy of hair color. You have made an investment in your hair color. Why would you let the sun destroy it? Aveda has a great product line for color treated hair the “Color Conserve” shampoo and conditioners. This product line has sun screen in it, so with daily use of the shampoo and conditioner you can help protect the life of that investment. Also for those days at the beach or pool “Color Conserve” has a leave-in conditioner that can be reapplied during your time in the sun protecting your color even more.

Chlorine, What to do about the chlorine? Yes, chlorine will do a number on the hair, skin and oh yes, your color. So before your dive in rinse your hair with fresh water first. This will act as a blocker to the chlorinated water. After swimming at the very least rinse the hair again with fresh water and shampoo ASAP. For those of you who cant get enough of the pool try Aveda “Detoxifer” shampoo once a week to help with any chlorine build up. Now don’t forget to give your skin a drink. The chlorine will dry the skin out. After your shower an all over lotion/moisturizer will do the trick. We wouldn’t want you to end up with skin that looks like a leather bag.

Sun's not for you? If the sun is not for you, but you would like the look of a nice natural tan, try Aveda “Sun Source” self tanner. Oh, the feared words “self tanner”. Have no fear, self tanners have come a long way from that unnatural orange look of yester year. “Sun Source” gives a wonderful natural looking golden tan that looks like you have spent time in the sun. Just follow the easy directions and in two hours you will have a fabulous tan. Couple tips with the self tanners: Exfoliate the skin before applying. Apply regular lotion to the ankles, knees and elbows before applying tanner (skin is usually dryer here and may take to dark). And use gloves when applying the tanner, your palms don’t need a tan.

Now get out there and enjoy the summer with a little less worry about ruining your color, damaging your skin or saving up for cosmetic surgery before your time.
